Dopamine Explained book cover
The problem

It starts with the situation you're actually in.

Search "dopamine" and you'll find it called the molecule of happiness, the brain's reward juice, the thing that makes you feel good. Tidy stories spread. But calling dopamine the pleasure chemical gets the science wrong.

You'll walk away with a stack of tools: friction, boredom, slow rewards, deciding once. But tools rust when you forget why you reached for them. You'll understand the terrain, not just memorize the map.
Outcomes

What you'll be able to do.

The bet your brain never stops placing

Your brain never stops placing a bet on what comes next. Press the elevator button — and notice the urge to press it again. You'll see that wager running under your everyday habits.

The screen is engineered around the gap

You set out to check one thing: the bus is two minutes away, so you open your phone to see if it's late. You'll learn how screens are engineered around exactly that gap.

Why willpower is the wrong tool

Think about the last time you promised yourself you'd "just be more disciplined" with your phone. You meant it — and you'll learn why willpower was never the right tool.

You can't detox from a chemical you can't live without

Watch what happens when the internet hands you the cure. Type "dopamine detox" into any search bar and you'll get the same promise: shut off your screens, snacks, music, and conversations for a day, and your brain chemistry "resets.".

Inside the book

A closer look at the work inside.

The myth: dopamine as the "pleasure chemical"

  • Liking is the pleasure of the reward itself — the warmth of the first sip of coffee, the satisfaction of a good meal, the relief of a finished task.
  • Wanting is the pull toward a reward before you have it — the reach, the urge, the "I need to check." This is dopamine's department. It is motivation, not enjoyment.

Find your own prediction errors

You can feel this engine running if you watch for it. For two days, each time you reach for your phone without a clear reason, pause and ask: What cue triggered the reach — boredom, a buzz, a transition between tasks? And what were you unconsciously hoping to find?

The refresh that trained you

Pull down on most feeds and the screen stretches, pauses, then snaps back loaded with new content. That gesture — pull-to-refresh — is a near-exact copy of pulling a slot lever, working on the same prediction error. The cue can be as small as feeling the phone in your pocket.

The tells, at a glance

Your thumb moved before you chose — the cue fired, a hook is engaged. You can't find the bottom — infinite scroll deleted your stopping point. Something started playing on its own — autoplay flipped the default to "continue." You're acting to avoid a loss, not gain a win — a streak or badge is steering you.

Your detox audit

Before you try anything, sort your own assumptions. In a notebook, answer: What do you actually want to change — focus, mood, time, or sleep? Which single loop costs you the most each day? Are you reaching for a screen to gain something, or to avoid a feeling?
