The problem

It starts with the situation you're actually in.

You put the passport in "a safe place." Three weeks later the flight is in two days, and that safe place has erased itself from your mind. If that sounds familiar, this book is built for the way your brain actually works.

The test of an organizing system isn't the day you build it. It's the Tuesday three weeks later when you're sick, behind on work, and walk in with grocery bags, a package, and a head full of tomorrow. That Tuesday isn't a failure of your system.

Who it is for

For readers who want organization that fits an ADHD brain: visible storage, launch pads, and doom-pile protocols, built on the truth that if you can't see it, it doesn't exist.

Outcomes

What you'll be able to do.

See What a Doom Pile Actually Is

You see how a pile begins as a single dropped thing—a jacket on the chair—so you can catch it at the start.

Visibility Is a Budget, Not a Setting

You bought the clear bins and labeled them—and you learn why that alone never settles the clutter.

The Pile That Wins by Default

Your counter holds two days of mail, a charger, a water bottle, a hoodie, a returns package you keep meaning to drop off, and three things you can't name without picking them up—and you walked past it eleven times today. You learn how to break that default.

The Thirty Seconds at the Door

You're already late—coat on, one shoe tied, the other foot hopping. You learn to win the thirty seconds at the door that decide whether you arrive with everything.

Inside the book

A closer look at the work inside.

Spot your own out-of-sight failures

Before you change anything, gather evidence. For the next two days, simply notice. When one of these happens, it's a marker that a hidden cue failed you, not.

  • You bought something you already owned but couldn't see.
  • You found food spoiled inside a closed fridge or cupboard.
  • You missed a dose, a bill, or a deadline that was "put away safely.".
  • You searched 10+ minutes for an item that was inside your home the whole time.

Why the "tidy" kitchen made things worse

Follow an ordinary sequence that plays out in countless homes. You buy opaque bins because they photograph well, sort the bathroom into closed containers—medications, first-aid, skincare—and clear the counter. It looks like a magazine, and that's the problem.

Reading a pile as data

Stop treating piles as mess to be ashamed of and start reading them as a friction report. Each one shows you exactly where a system is missing. Walk up to your most stubborn pile and ask what categories are in it—if it's mostly mail, paper handling is your gap.

Case study: rebuilding an entryway shelf

Walk through a real surface so the levers stop being abstract. One open shelf by the door holds keys, sunglasses, two phone cables, a stack of mail, hand lotion, gum, spare batteries, a flashlight, three random screws, and a candle—all of it visible. You learn how to rebuild it.

Design your launch pad

Work through the launch pad worksheet in order, writing the answers down—staging the plan is itself a launch pad move. Start with the exit walk: name the last surface your hand touches before the door and the first place your keys land at home. If they aren't the same spot, the launch pad goes at the arrival drop.
