The Human Advantage book cover
The problem

It starts with the situation you're actually in.

A helpdesk agent at a midsized software company watched a chatbot take over the first reply to every support ticket. The bot drafted clear, polite answers in seconds. Then, within a month, something odd started to happen.

You've taken the machine apart and put your own work back together. Now comes the part most people skip: turning all of that understanding into something you actually do on Monday.

Who it is for

For readers who want to understand what AI can't do, and how to stay irreplaceable in an AI world.

Outcomes

What you'll be able to do.

Spot AI's confident, invented facts

You'll ask a chatbot to name three peer-reviewed studies on a topic you know well — and learn to catch the titles that sound right but don't exist.

Four strengths, defined by what the machine lacks

You'll see why an AI screener ranks résumés by keyword match, years of experience, and writing quality — and what it can't weigh.

The Skill That Outlived Its Tools

You'll recognize the skill that survives a major tool change — like the accountant who moved from paper ledgers to spreadsheets to cloud software and grew more sought-after each time.

AI drafts, you decide

Take something you handed to AI last week — a draft email, a summary, a block of code, a plan — and answer one question: if it had gone wrong, who would have had to explain it?

Inside the book

A closer look at the work inside.

Before You Read: What This Book Is For checklist

  • The output looks finished, so no one checks it. Polished prose hides missing reasoning. A plausible wrong answer is more dangerous than an obvious one.
  • You lose the reps. Judgment is built by doing the smaller versions of it. Hand all the drafting to a machine and you stop practicing the thinking that drafting forces.
  • No one can answer for it. When the high-stakes call comes from a tool, there is no person who understood the trade-offs and chose. That gap shows up exactly when it costs the most.

Do This Now: Map Your Own Week

Spend fifteen minutes mapping your real week. List everything you actually did — be specific ("drafted the weekly status email," not "communication") — then tag each task P for mostly pattern or J for mostly judgment.

Reference: The Words People Use, In Plain Terms checklist

  • Did any "fact" sound authoritative but turn out wrong? (Confident wrong answer.).
  • Did any named source or study fail to exist when you checked? (Invented fact.).
  • Did it miss something obvious that any insider would include? (Missing context.).
  • Was any date or "current" claim out of date? (Stale information.).

The same weakness, three ways

Run one small experiment in any chatbot to feel all four failures at once. Pick a topic you know cold — your field, your hometown, a hobby — and ask for three specific facts, with dates and named sources for each.

Name your own four

Don't take these on faith — find them in your real month. For each capability, write one specific moment you used it: a time you overrode the "obvious" answer or the data; something you knew that a rules-based tool couldn't; a decision where your name and reputation were on the line.
