The problem

It starts with the situation you're actually in.

You didn't pick up this book because you stopped loving your partner. You picked it up because the same fight keeps happening and neither of you can explain why. It's built for that gap between intention and follow-through.

You read a relationship book, and for ten days things change. Then they don't — because goodwill is not a system.

Who it is for

For partners on both sides of ADHD who keep hitting the parent-child trap, an uneven household load, and conversations that breed resentment.

Outcomes

What you'll be able to do.

Why the Chore List Lies

You'll see why an evenly split list of dishes, trash, laundry, and groceries can still leave one partner carrying far more than their share.

Match the Task to the Neurology, Not the Calendar

You'll build a division of labor that survives past Thursday, instead of one that collapses the moment a deadline hits and the noticing-and-deciding load slides back onto whoever carries it by default.

Read Intensity as Wiring, Not Character

You'll recognize the moment a fight about an unplanned charge stops being about money — and learn to work with emotional intensity and RSD instead of escalating it.

The Cost Nobody Itemizes

You'll learn to protect the supporting partner's reserves — the single battery every system in this book draws power from — before they run dry.

Inside the book

A closer look at the work inside.

The Four-Mechanism Self-Assessment

For each statement, score how true it has felt over the last 30 days, from 1 (rarely) to 5 (almost always).

  • Tasks I'm asked to do slip out of mind within the hour. 1 2 3 4 5.
  • One of us gets absorbed in something and loses the other. 1 2 3 4 5 EMOTIONAL REGULATION.
  • A small request lands as criticism and the mood drops fast.

Before You Begin checklist

  • The reframe is the foundation. Missed tasks and emotional spikes are mechanisms — attention, regulation, follow-through, impulse — not verdicts on love.
  • The snapshot is your baseline. Your four-mechanism scores and your one-page Current State give every later exercise something concrete to measure against.
  • The vocabulary is shared. When you both can say "that was a follow-through gap" instead of "you never listen," you have a common language to solve in.

Two Readings of the Same Tuesday

One missed dentist call, read two ways. The character reading — "I'm not a priority" — leaves you hurt and resentful. The neurology reading — a low-stimulation task with no cue dropped out of working memory — leaves frustration, but not betrayal.

The Role Audit

You can't change a role you can't catch yourself playing. For one week, run a lightweight audit to notice your own slide into parent or child mode in real time — logged somewhere fast to reach, like phone notes or an index card.

Breaking the Loop This Week

  • I logged my own slides into parent or child mode for at least five days.
  • I identified the single trigger that pulls me in most often.
  • I ran one friction point through all four protocol moves: Name, Return, Structure, Stop.
  • The structure I set attaches to the task (calendar, alert, visual cue), not to watching my partner.
  • After the hand-off, I did not re-check, re-remind, or silently redo it.
  • If I'm the managed partner, I named at least one task out loud before it was rescued.
