Name Your Last Three Regressions

Look back at your three most recent "Claude got worse" moments. For each, answer in writing: what the model did wrong, the session age at failure in turns or rough duration, and whether a clean restart fixed it.

When the Session Turns on You checklist

  • Is the rule still in context? Check whether your CLAUDE.md and opening constraint survived summarization. If the session is long and the rule is old, decay is the leading suspect.
  • Did it break a standing rule while obeying a recent one? If you just asked for "cleaner separation" and the model interpreted that as "move validation to middleware," it weighted.
  • Does it reproduce clean? Open a fresh session, paste the minimal context, ask the same question. If Claude proposes middleware validation again from a clean slate, the behavior is.

Decay Is Loss of Weight, Not Loss of Memory checklist

  • Separate the machines. Name the window, summarization, and retrieval, and say what each one fails at.
  • Run the restatement test. State the one-line check that distinguishes decay from a model-level problem (restate the rule; if behavior snaps back, it was decay).
  • Forecast a bite. Given a session that just ingested three large files at turn 30 with a rule last stated at turn 4, predict whether decay is imminent and why (token pressure plus.

Watching One Rule Decay

Trace a real sequence while refactoring an authentication module across a long session. At turn 3 you instruct that all new public functions need JSDoc with @throws tags, and Claude adds them perfectly—the rule has high weight, recent and uncontested. By turn 22, a summarization event fires as context fills.

Decay is predictable enough to forecast. Three conditions raise the probability sharply, and you can read all three off your own session state—starting with token pressure: the closer you are to a summarization event, the more aggressively reasoning gets compressed.
