The problem

It starts with the situation you're actually in.

Ask a large language model to write a whole novel in one prompt, then watch what happens around the forty-thousand-word mark: the protagonist's eye color drifts—green early on, brown later, with nothing in between to explain it.

Understanding the pipeline produces no accepted words until you stand the system up yourself and watch it fail in ways the documentation never mentioned. Treat your first deployment as the instrument that finds those failures.
Outcomes

What you'll be able to do.

The contradiction the loop cannot see

You'll see how a detail established early—a harbor that freezes solid from November through February—gets quietly contradicted later, when the model generates a nighttime escape by boat in isolation, blind to what it already wrote.

When the gates pass but the prose is dead

You'll learn to spot the passage that satisfies every rule of admissibility—nothing technically wrong—yet reads as dead on the page.

The gap between "done writing" and "done"

You'll close the gap between an accepted draft and a finished product: turning a 79,000-word string of Markdown into a typeset interior, a cover, a metadata record, a possible narrated audio edition, and a way to put it in readers' hands.

The question the pipeline cannot answer for you

You'll be ready for the question your CFO asks once a finished draft lands in your output directory: what did this book cost, and would a person have done it cheaper or better?

Inside the book

A closer look at the work inside.

The fit scorecard

Where the matrix only names your quadrant, the fit scorecard turns that intuition into a number you can defend to a stakeholder—scoring the same two factors on a finer scale and adding three the map ignores: what a slip costs, what you can spend, and what's at stake.

The loop, stated plainly checklist

  • Propose. The prose layer generates a candidate paragraph in which the detective says, "I knew the moment I saw the muddy boots.".
  • Evaluate — mechanical. Length check passes. Structure check confirms this beat belongs in this guide per the outline. So far, keepable.
  • Evaluate — state. The continuity layer is queried: was the detective ever shown the muddy boots? The committed record says no—the boots appeared in a scene she was absent from.
  • Discard, with a reason logged: "character knowledge state inconsistent.".
  • Re-propose with the constraint injected: either the detective infers from evidence she did see, or an upstream change is proposed, such as adding a scene where she sees the boots.
  • Keep. The revised paragraph passes both gates. Its new facts—she now knows about the gardener—are written back into the continuity record, where they constrain every later step.

Tracing one keep/discard cycle

Trace a single keep/discard cycle mid-run on a 70,000-word mystery, at the beat where the detective must reveal she already suspected the gardener: Propose the paragraph, then run the mechanical checks—length passes.

A seed ready to run

Before you launch, confirm each of these is explicitly encoded, not left to the pipeline's discretion.

  • Length target and a numeric tolerance, with a stated rule for which wins when structure and length conflict.
  • Point of view and tense fixed as hard constraints, not preferences.
  • At least three canon rules stated as testable propositions.
  • A forbid list naming the specific failure modes you fear most for this premise.
  • Tonal comps that anchor register without supplying a plot to imitate.

Case study: the 79,456-word run, read as a spec problem

Community coverage around Hermes/autonovel reported a 79,456-word novel, The Second Son of the House of Bells, tied to an NVIDIA GTC demonstration. Treat the figure with care—it's reported community output, not a controlled benchmark—and verify any throughput claim against your own run before you plan around it.
